2008-04 Little Manatee River F-Troop : Little Manatee River State Park provides access to a preserved sliver of wilderness along the river, encompassing a variety of habitats, numerous waterways and one of the most beautiful creeks in the state. There is a loop trail which is 6.5 miles, but this hike can be shortened to 2.9 miles by taking the blue-blazed cross trail. On this F-Troop in April 2008 we spent a weekend tearing out one of the old bridges and replacing it with a new one. This trail is not connected to the Florida National Scenic Trail, but is a part of the Florida Trail System. The project was hosted by the Suncoast Chapter and sponsored in part by a grant from the American Hiking Society, with additional funding from Florida State Parks and the National Forests Foundation.

2007-11 Juniper Prairie Wilderness F-Troop : The Juniper Prairie Wilderness is a special place in the Ocala National Forest, a roadless zone that is one of the most popular segments of the Florida Trail. In November 2007, our trail crew paddled in to the heart of the Juniper Prairie Wilderness for a week of backcountry camping and trail work, floating our tools and supplies down Juniper Run to spend 5 days out on the trail. No power tools are allowed in the Wilderness area, so crosscut saws and axes were our primary tools. Hosted by the Halifax-St Johns Chapter, the base camp was primitive and all equipment brought in by canoe, a first for F-Troop! Training included Wilderness Leave No Trace practices and Traditional Tools.

2007-11 Hillsborough River F-Troop : One of Florida's oldest state parks, Hillsborough River State Park offers something few other hikes in Florida can: rapids! There are three riverside trails which create a 5.8-mile loop. This F-Troop, held November 30-December 2, 2007, focused on getting the footpath in good shape. Crushed shell and limestone were used to fill in holes and improve drainage, and about 1,000 invasive Cesar Weed plants were removed. This trail is not connected to the Florida National Scenic Trail, but is a part of the Florida Trail System. The project was hosted by the Suncoast Chapter and sponsored in part by a grant from the American Hiking Society, with additional funding from Florida State Parks and the National Forests Foundation.

2007-10 Fort Braden F-Troop : The Fort Braden Hiking Trail provides a great outdoor experience only a few minutes from Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, The trail meanders through the rolling hills and bluffs of the Lake Talquin State Forest. There are three loops to choose from and together they can be combined for an overnight trip. On this October 2007 F-Troop, we spent two days building new boardwalks through marshy areas and making improvements to some existing bridges. Although the trail is part of the Florida Trail System, it is a side trail and not connected to the National Scenic Trail. This project was hosted by the Apalachee Chapter and sponsored in part by a grant from the American Hiking Society, with additional funding from the Florida Department of Forestry and the Apalachee Chapter.

2007-09 Bradwell Bay F-Troop : The infamous Bradwell Bay Wilderness is on FIRE! Don’t panic, it’s completely natural. Fire is just Mother Nature’s way of doing a little house cleaning around the forest. However, Ma Nature can leave a bit of a mess behind, too. Several years ago a large wildfire blazed through the Wilderness and, although it is recovering nicely, some of those big old dead trees are falling down and they always seem to fall right onto the trail. No chainsaws allowed in the Wilderness, so we broke out all of the traditional hand tools for this one to clean up “one of the 10 toughest hikes in the US” according to Backpacker Magazine.
